Coronation Roadside Outreach

Alleviating Hunger in the Helderberg Community

Supporting vulnerable individuals and families with essential food and care.

About Coronation Roadside

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and supporting unemployed roadside job seekers and their families in the Helderberg neighbourhood.

Although our roots are in the social mission of the Coronation Avenue Methodist church in Somerset West, we reach out to all, without discrimination on race, social status, gender, or religion.

Supporting the Vulnerable
Providing aid to those in need regardless of race, social status, gender, or religion.

Our food hampers offer essential nutrition to adults facing food insecurity, while children receive treats as a gesture of care.

Community Focus
Building a stronger Helderberg through collaborative support and outreach.

We work with local partners to amplify our impact and address the root causes of food insecurity in our community.

Holistic Approach
Addressing broader personal needs beyond just providing food.

We aim to empower individuals and families by working toward sustainable solutions that reduce dependence on external aid.

Our Evolution & Mission

How we got here

Our care for the needy started before 2013, when a bible study group packed some peanut butter sandwiches for handing out to roadside job seekers in Somerset West. The need grew rapidly, especially during Covid, from 140 half loaves a week, to where we now reach over 500 folk every week with hampers of bread, maize and fruit.

When women started queueing with the men, we realised we needed to extend our ministry to them and their little children. Generous donors have enabled us to grow in generosity, in numbers and distribution sites, through financial support, and additional food packages.

To enable it to grow, the ministry has become a voluntary organisation separate from the church, while being grounded and supported by it. Formal registration as a non profit organisation, either as a NPO or PBO, will occur once the necessary criteria can be met.

Wider objectives

  • Raise awareness of the challenges faced by roadside unemployed individuals and mobilise resources through individual and corporate contributions.
  • Increase the active involvement and membership of committed individuals and organisations to sustain and expand our impact.
  • Identify and address the broader personal needs of our beneficiaries beyond food, striving to improve their overall well-being.
  • Empower individuals by addressing the underlying causes of their need for roadside help, with the goal of reducing their dependence on external aid.
  • Collaborate with other like-minded organisations to amplify our collective impact and work towards sustainable community development.
